  • CLASS DESCRIPTIONS MASSAGE THERAPIST COURSE

  • A) A typical class day would be hands on demonstrations followed by practicing the massage routine. Students will work on each other during this time.

  • B) Internship will follow after you have finished your class training.    Here you work on real clients at our spa. A shift time will be agreed upon based on your schedule and ours. Most shifts are 4 to 8 hours long starting at 9 AM to 10 PM daily including Saturday. You receive 1 hour Internship credit for every hour of massage you perform.

Pathology, Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology: This class covers the study of the basic structures, functions and movement of the body, including the skin, digestive system, bones, joints, and the origins, insertions and functions of the major muscles. Contraindication and precautions for massage are given. Anatomical information is also included in massage demonstration.

Basic and Advanced Swedish Massage: This class teaches the basic and most widely taught massage strokes, which form the foundation of the Institute’s training. Deep tissue is added for the chronic problem areas of the upper back, lower back and hip, and neck. You will learn to do a half hour to 2.5 hours of full-body massage routine. We include instruction on the use of oil, lotion and draping of sheets, and draping of towels. Massage patterns are demonstrated throughout the course.

Body Mechanics: This class is designed to help give you a beginning awareness of your body while giving a massage, including how to stand to give power to the massage strokes, maximize stamina and prevent injury.

Ethics and Professionalism: This class considers legal, ethical and personal conduct issues connected with massage therapy as a profession. Learn what the local law ordinances say, how to deal with a difficult client or a client that is asking you to break the law. Remember when a client is on your massage table, you are in control.

Sports Massage: This class is broken down to three sections. Students will learn the most common sports massage strokes applied to different sports before and after training and competition, and how to massage athletes ranging from sprinters to long distance marathon runners. BSI students will learn different strokes used to reach deeper into the muscles for treating certain sports-related disorders, and how and when to apply the different strokes to different parts of the body. Lastly, students will learn different techniques to effectively relax tensed muscles that will not release with ordinary sports massage strokes. These techniques will effectively relax the muscles.

Reflexology - Level 1: This class covers the history, principles and contraindication of Reflexology, and the theory of reflexes and zones. Students will study the anatomy of the foot, the thumb and finger techniques. Students will learn relaxation techniques and practical application covering the head, neck and shoulders, the chest and Digestive System, the pelvic region, the chest, breast and Lymphatic System.

Deep Tissue Integration - Level I: This course introduces principles of postural bodywork using deep tissue techniques and movement education. Topics include palpation, visual pattern recognition, myofascial release, appropriate depth of touch, and review of pertinent anatomy.

Pregnancy Massage: This class offers a overview of all stages of pregnancy, including pregnancy anatomy. Strong emphasis is familiarizing the therapist with contraindication and concerns during each stage of the gestation period. Strokes given are familiar techniques used in advanced Swedish and acupressure.

Lymphatics for Immune Response - Level I: This class will develop understanding of the functions of the lymphatic and immune systems, and their roles in maintaining optimum health. It will introduce a treatment protocol for the front of the body (which is enough to perform a thorough session), starting with hands-on therapy, to enhance the immune system functions, leading to tissue regeneration.

Business and Career Development: This class will discuss both practical and legal aspects of the massage business, making massage your career choice, career opportunities and specific marketing techniques, goal setting, professionalism, bookkeeping and accounting, and time and stress management. The class will be part lecture and part interactive to help students become clearer on sense of direction and career choices, as well as gain a clearer vision on how to achieve specific goals.

Business Management Level I: This class gives you a greater understanding of what it takes to manage a massage spa practice. After training you will be the “acting” manager for a shift including answering the phones, scheduling the appointments, scheduling the therapists, managing walk in clients looking for a massage right now, laundry and supply usage and inventory, therapist and client concerns.

Operational Procedures: This class offers information on how to run a massage facility, how to be organized and ready to allow for you to do your best work and the client to receive a rewarding massage. This class also covers information that you will need to know regardless if you went to work for another facility or opened up your own business. This class is taught before your internship starts.

Internship Clinic: This is where you switch from massaging on your fellow classmates to massaging real clients. BSI will book the appointments. This is when you pull all you know together and start to perfect everything you know. It really starts to make sense of things at this point especially when you can really make someone feel “great”, relieve a migraine, or get the circulation back in someone’s feet or hands.

    Shiatsu Massage:
Shiatsu is the Japanese form of acupressure massage. Instead of acupuncture needles, massage techniques such as kneading, pressing, adjusting, etc. are used to stimulate the system of acupuncture channels.

Deep Tissue & Advanced Deep Tissue Massage:
Deep tissue massage is effective because of its technique - consisting of slower, stronger massage, that stimulates deep into muscles. Deep tissue massage stimulates, conditions, and heals. It is a matter of technique and not your personal strength.

    Aromatherapy Massage:
Aromatherapy doesn’t just smell good, it also benefits you in many ways. Aromatherapy doesn’t “cure” major illness but it is effective at alleviating many discomforts. Essential oils are at the heart of aromatherapy. You will learn about different essential oils and how to properly make your own blends.

  • Spa and Specialty Massage Treatments: This class teaches the use of hot packs, Cryotherapy (Ice therapy), Hydration Therapy through use of moist hot towels. In addition you will learn about when to use different oils, lotions, creams, essential oils, muscle rubs, topical ointments and more. You will also learn how to do a  2 Therapist Massage routine, Full body exfoliation massage, clay body treatment, and facial massage.

    Continuning Education Courses

Geriatric Massage: This class presents a very gentle and nurturing form of massage therapy, stressing the empathic quality of the therapist. It is an easy and safe method for massaging older people, but can be used after operations, or for anyone. This method is a valuable tool to calm, stabilize, stimulate and enhance the quality of life, especially for aging persons.

Myofascial Trigger Points: This class covers basic theories on finding and learning myofascial trigger points, those tender spots on muscle fibers which radiate pain to specific areas. In some cases, trigger points can cause autonomic symptoms such as vertigo, reduced hearing, runny nose, tinnitus, dry cough, dry eyes, etc.

Spa and Specialty Massage Treatments: This class teaches the use of hot packs, Cryotherapy (Ice therapy), Hydration Therapy through use of moist hot towels. In addition you will learn about when to use different oils, lotions, creams, essential oils, muscle rubs, topical ointments and more. You will also learn how to do a  2 Therapist Massage routine, Full body exfoliation massage, clay body treatment, and facial massage.

Hypnotherapy Massage: Take your client into a light hypnotic state by guiding them with your massage techniques, touch and pressure. Your client will become so absorbed by your cyclical rhythm, entering them in a deeper state of relaxation.

Migraine & TMJ Therapy: This class offers instruction on how to greatly reduce to eliminate a migraine in 20 minutes or less. Many times migraine sufferers don’t get relief from drugs any more or want to be more proactive with their treatment plan. Migraine therapy is a great choice. In addition, learn how to help those with TMJ reduce their pain quickly.

HEALING THROUGH TOUCH is one of the oldest therapies in the world. The “laying on of hands” for the sick and injured can be seen in prehistoric cave paintings, predating 5,000 years of recorded history. Today, we are witnessing a “recognition” of the benefits of human touch as a basic need and are again beginning to value its healing qualities. We are learning in scientific laboratories that these therapies affect the physical being at the core, in a very literal sense, as well as opening emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions. We are realizing that body, mind and spirit operate as a unit, and so the need to approach them as one is necessary. Our aim is to teach these body therapies in conjunction with allopathic, alternative and complimentary medicine. The Institute offers students an opportunity to learn a profession where they may use body, mind and spirit to facilitate health, well-being, and a better quality of life for themselves and their clients, while at the same time earning a good living. Our commitment is to provide a supportive environment in which to teach students proper techniques and sensitivities, and the business aspects of body work, plus a respect for the human body, the professional and for themselves as professionals. The Institute offers a place for beginners, as well as the continuing education of professionals currently practicing in the field. We strive to further establish legitimacy as hands-on health care professionals by seeking credibility and acceptance through research, city ordinances, state legislation, education of the public, continued development of ethics, policies, and higher standards in both education and practice.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Eligibility: To be admitted, prospective students must be at least 18 years of age and be evaluated favorably, through either an interview or introduction at an Open House, to determine their likely success as a massage professional. At this time, a tour of the school is given. Students must be emotionally stable and physically capable of performing massage manipulation inherent to the program. Any person convicted of a felony that involves sexual assult or prostitution is ineligible to obtain a massage permit.

    LIFETIME EMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE

Community-Based Employment: An active placement file is maintained by the Institute. We do not guarantee placement, but do provide assistance whenever possible. Also, academic and employment advisement is provided by the Director upon request. Please schedule an appointment with the receptionist.

    Approval Disclosure Statement

The Private Post Secondary and Vocational Education Reform Act (ACT) became inoperative June 30, 2007.  Up until the first part of 2010,  in California, there was no regulatory body with oversight of Private Post Secondary schools. Currently, the BUREAU FOR PRIVATE POST SECONDARY AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION is back up and running and accepting applications.  BSI is on file with the Bureau and is currently in the application applying process.  BSI is operating and feels they are meeting the standards provided prior to the sunsetting of the regulatory body. BSI is not a state approved school at this time because the State of California is reviewing our application but meets the requirements to operate in the interium. Graduates will still be able to get licensed locally. Complaints should first go to Knute Berry, School Director. Unresolved complaints may be directed to the BUREAU FOR PRIVATE POST SECONDARY AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION, P.O. BOX 980818, WEST SACRAMENTO, CA 95798 (916) 445-3428 OR THE DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS. BSI is a member of the International Massage Association (IMA).
